Volunteer Highlight: Amanda Gilbert

Thursday visitors know and love Amanda for her welcoming and upbeat attitude. Amanda has been a docent at the Log House Museum for eight years and is also our Volunteer Coordinator. She does a terrific job of organizing the weekly volunteer schedule and hosts a quarterly docent training –famed for a delightful selection of wine and cheeses. Amanda took the time to answer a few questions for us about her volunteer experience:

How long have you been volunteering at the Log House Museum? I started volunteering at the Log House almost 8 years ago after I moved here from the Eastside. I didn’t know anything about West Seattle ( well, except that Trader Joe’s was opening a store here soon and Eddie Vedder lived here!) and the museum was within rolling distance from my house so I thought I could volunteer there and maybe learn something.

What is your favorite thing about being a docent? The people that you meet – not just museum visitors but all the fun volunteers and staff.

What is your favorite thing about our local history? After living in the relative ‘newness & sameness’ of the Eastside it is a lot of fun to roll past the longest continuously lived in house in the area ( Doc Maynard’s) and the landing point of the Denny Party and see homes from the early 1900’s happily coexisting with mid-century ramblers and 2000’s contemporaries.
