tʔáwi: Creek of Hope & Longfellow Creek Exhibit & Diary Project

Opening this June! The Southwest Seattle Historical Society in partnership with the Duwamish Alive Coalition and Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association presents tʔáwi: Creek of Hope, an exploration of Longfellow Creek, featuring photographs from renowned photojournalist Tom Reese

From its 10,000 year-old headwaters at Roxhill Park, Longfellow Creek is the backbone of the Duwamish Peninsula. Its story reflects the complex changes of the region over the last century. Discover little-known places along the creek, human and wildlife connections, and the questions we face about its future.

Opening Reception with Tom Reese, Susan Leishman (DAC) and Caroline Boresnik (DNDA).  Thursday June 22 from 6:30-8pm

Hear from the exhibit’s photographer and advocates who are working to restore and preserve Longfellow Creek. Light Refreshments will be provided. RSVP is encouraged, but not required.

Family Day with DNDA! Saturday, July 8 12pm-3pm

Get hands on with DNDA Environmental Educators and learn about Longfellow Creek. Activities include watershed models where participants can experiment with different ways stormwater and pollutants move through a watershed like Longfellow Creek and impact local salmon and salmon art projects with recycled art supplies and found objects from nature.

Hike the Longfellow Creek Saturday, August 12 Registration information coming soon!

Join SWSHS and DNDA Environmental Educators on a guided hike along the forested trails of Longfellow Creek. Learn about the different plants and animals that inhabit this important ecosystem and about urban impacts effecting the creek and ways we can help reduce those impacts. The hike will be ~ 1 mile total on mainly flat trails. Participants should dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and are encouraged to bring water.

Longfellow Creek Diary Project: The iconic Longfellow Creek runs the length of West Seattle. From its headwaters at Roxhill all the way to Elliot Bay, Longfellow Creek is an important part of this city’s story and that of our community. We want your personal stories of the creek in this community Diary of Longfellow – past experiences, current activities or special memories all help tell the tapestry of Longfellow’s story.

Additional fall programs around the Longfellow Creek, including hikes and a panel program, will be announced soon!

Your story will live in the SWSHS’s oral history collection, accessible to future researchers and ecologists. Our future Duwamish Peninsula thanks you!
